Sandra Becker, Bucks County Poet Laureate

Please join Impact Thrift in congratulating one of our wonderful volunteers, Sandra Becker, as she is named the 2014 Bucks County Poet Laureate!  Sandra truly deserves this prestigious honor.

Sandra has been a Coach for Jamie, a long-time volunteer at Impact Thrift’s Donation Processing Center, three times weekly.  We are very grateful for their many accomplishments sorting, recycling and preparing donated goods for sale in support of Impact Thrift’s mission.

As is true of many Impact Thrift volunteers who graciously commit their time, Sandra has cultivated many talents over her lifetime.  She is being recognized for her wonderfully deep and moving poetry at this year’s Poet Laureate reading and reception on Sunday, November 16 at Bucks County Community College.

After earning a degree in psychology from CUNY Queens College, Becker studied at Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado.  She later studied poetry with Martha Rhodes, director of The Frost Place in New Hampshire.  “My poetry became a portal to inhabiting my feelings and experience rather than trying to transcend them.  It was like climbing down a ladder, and having my feet touch the ground.”

Her feet touched Bucks County ground in 1994 when she moved to Doylestown from New York City, and was delighted to discover the community of poets that she would come to know and grow with year after year.  Becker has since published three books of poetry: Foreign Bodies (Carolina Wren Press, 2004), At the Well of Flowers (Virtual Artists Collective, 2011), and Imperfect Matter (Wordtech Editions, 2013).

It is our pleasure to wish Sandra success with her latest manuscript of stories based on the special-needs people with whom she works as support staff.  Impact Thrift truly appreciates Sandra’s contributions to our mission, and is especially pleased that her poetry is receiving this award as she is named the 2014 Bucks County Poet Laureate!
