This year, Impact Thrift Stores celebrates 15 years! From our first store that opened in Hatboro, PA in late 2001 through the recent move of our Norristown store to a larger, more modern facility, Impact Thrift has been serving the Philadelphia area community in so many ways! Check out this timeline of our growth…

On January 15, 2001, Impact Thrift Stores founder, Paul Baur thought, “If a thrift store could support one charity, why couldn’t it support many?” The concept of Impact Thrift was born.

By December 5, 2001, Impact Thrift Stores incorporated, received its 501(c)(3) status, established a board of directors, purchased a building, filled a warehouse with gently used donations and opened for business in the old Santarians Department Store building in Hatboro. As donations poured in, they rapidly outgrew the one-store concept.

In November of 2002, a second store was opened on West Main Street in Lansdale.

In July 2004, Impact Thrift was asked to take over the struggling Lifeline Thrift in East Norriton and added International Health Services (the organization supported by Lifeline Thrift) as a supported charity.

In November 2008, the East Norriton store moved to a new location at 1798 Markley Street in Norristown. In August of 2009, the Lansdale operation was moved to a larger location at the old Atlantic Book Warehouse building on Route 309 in Montgomeryville.

In April 2012, Impact Thrift Stores opened its fourth and largest store located on Street Road in the Bucks Crossing Shopping Center in Feasterville. This mega-size thrift store, previously Value City and before that Clover, introduced Impact Thrift Stores to Bucks County shoppers and donors.

In November 2012, Impact Thrift Stores opened a Donation Processing Center centrally located in Montgomeryville, PA. Donations are received at each store and trucked to the processing center daily where a veritable army of staff sorts, tags for resale or recycles the items. Those tagged for sale are shipped to the stores daily.

In August 2015, Impact Thrift opened the Bristol Store as a clothing-only store at 208 Commerce Circle in Bristol to help meet a need in that area for lower cost clothing. We have since added Bric-a-Brac and Media departments to that store.

In August 2016, the Norristown Impact Thrift moved to a much larger, more modern building in the Norristown Center.panoramic view of Impact Thrift Stores Norristown location on Markley Street at Johnson Highway in Norristown PA

Today, Impact Thrift Stores is touching more lives than ever and remains focused on financially supporting locally based charities; offering reasonably priced merchandise for sale through its five retail stores; and providing jobs to more than 240 part-time and full-time employees.

Since 2012, Impact Thrift has responsibly recycled more than 9.3 million pounds of clothing, metals, books and household items that could not be sold in our stores. In addition, last year Impact Thrift welcomed 986 volunteers who completed 19,559 hours of service. Visit our website to learn more about how you can get involved!

Impact Thrift Stores will mark its 15th anniversary on America Recycles Day, November 15th, with collection drives, commendations, and of course, cake!  The highlight of the day comes at 10 a.m. when Sustainable Waste Solutions (SWS) of Souderton will make a presentation to Impact Thrift certifying the nonprofit organization as officially “landfill free.” Montgomery County Commissioner Dr. Val Arkoosh will follow with a proclamation recognizing Impact Thrift. Representatives from the offices of U. S. Congressman Brendan Boyle and Pennsylvania State Rep. Matt Bradford also will be on hand for the presentations.

At Impact Thrift Stores we responsibly recycle clothing and fabric goods that are not sold in our stores located in Norristown, Feasterville, Montgomeryville, Hatboro and Bristol PA

Clothing and soft goods that do not reach the standards to be sold in our stores are baled in our Donation Processing Center and responsibly recycled.

Impact Thrift’s primary mission is to raise significant funds for our supported charities. We fulfill this mission by operating thrift stores stocked with your gently-used donated items. Just the fact that virtually everything we sell ends up being placed back into service by our shoppers, places us squarely in the recycling business. All donations that we receive are thoroughly inspected and only the best of what we receive make it onto our sales floor. That leaves us with a large amount of items that need to be trashed or recycled. We recycle everything we can. Be assured that we do our research to be certain that every recycler we deal with handles all items for recycling in an environmentally responsible manner.

Since 2012, Impact Thrift has recycled 7.5 million pounds of clothing, 1.4 million pounds of metal, 749,000 pounds of housewares, and 2.7 million pounds of books. Just since January 2016, Impact Thrift has recycled 3.3 million pounds of clothing, metal, bric-a-brac and books.

metals that are donated to Impact Thrift Stores but not of quality to sell in our thrift stores in Norristown, Feasterville, Hatboro, Montgomeryville or Bristol, are responsibly recycled

Just a small sample of the various metals Impact Thrift Stores is able to recycle through our partnership with 611 Metals Recycling.

Join us on November 15th at our Norristown Impact Thrift Store location to learn more about how you are recycling as you donate, what we do with items that we can not sell and our new partnership with SWS, Sustainable Waste Solutions of Souderton. Bring along donations of clothing, household goods, and electronics to a Collection Drive held in our parking lot from 9am to noon. (Please note that televisions cannot be accepted for recycling.) Our partner, 611 Metals Recycling, will be on hand to collect non-working electronics and scrap metal.

SWS is a leading provider of environmentally friendly commercial and industrial waste handling solutions in Southeastern Pennsylvania, the Lehigh Valley and Delaware. In addition to their advanced recycling techniques, SWS converts waste into energy by delivering it to a state-of-the-art Energy-from-Waste (EfW) resource recovery facility. Impact Thrift recently contracted with SWS to manage its waste.

There you might find brands such as Coach, Ann Taylor, Michael Kors, Burberry,  Zac Posen… or maybe even Armani  or Dolce & Gabbana, all at a fraction of their retail price

#4. Mom’s not into gently used items? We also carry a selection of Brand New clothing, accessories and furniture at Impact Thrift Stores! You may also come across donated items that still have their original sales tags proving they’ve never been worn.

#3. Introduce Mom to the thrill of shopping thrift! Gift cards always make a great gift and they are available at any of our stores.

#2. Mom will appreciate your frugality! Shopping thrift is a great way to show Mom that she taught you well and you value her wisdom!

And the #1 reason to shop thrift for Mom… Shop with Mom! Spend some quality time with Mom browsing Impact Thrift and bring back memories as you find items from your childhood, or Mom’s! Shopping Thrift is truly a Treasure Hunt to be Shared!

Shop in the morning than take Mom out to lunch… give Mom the gift of time together!

Spring Clean + Earth Day = Donate + Recycle

every day is Earth Day at Impact Thrift Stores as you recycle by donating items such as clothing, shoes and household goods for resale in our storesWhen an equation balances…
the results can be spectacular!

Spring Clean + Earth Day = Donate + Recycle!

Friday, April 22 is Earth Day but we like to think that EVERY day is Earth Day!

Every merchandise donation you make to Impact Thrift, helps to keep those items out of land fills and puts most back in service! Every purchase you make from our stores helps us to financially support a variety of non-profits in the Philadelphia area!

Earth Day began in 1970 as a day to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. It has morphed into a year round, sustainable movement that is more about action than talk… a movement focused on a future of clean air, clean energy and a clean world for generations to come.

Every one who shops or donates to a thrift store is a participant in Earth Day every day.

This year we will be participating in a number of Collection Drives in the area. If you are interested in organizing a Collection Drive for your school, business or neighborhood, contact us today!
